The Michigan Tech trail system includes 33 km of groomed cross country ski trails (both classic and skate sections) and 11.7 km of groomed snowshoe trails. 7.5 km of the trail is lighted and there is even a 2.5 km skijor trail. The system also includes almost 24 km of ungroomed trails that can be used for snowshoeing or hiking. The Tech Trails are nationally recognized for the quality or skiing, consistency of grooming and variety of terrain.
The Michigan Tech trail system is divided into the Competition and Upper Trails (360 acres) and the Nana and Lower Trails (155 acres). Both sections include easy, intermediate, and advanced trails. Information on the trail loops can be found here.
The trail system is located at the south end of the Michigan Tech campus in Houghton, across from the Student Development Complex (SDC). However there are 7 different trail heads through out the system.
Directions to the main trail head: Turn at the light on MacInnes Drive (located on the south side of Houghton from US 41). Follow MacInnes Drive to Sharon Avenue and the Student Development Complex (SDC). Take Sharon avenue past the SDC to the access road for IMR storage. Turn left to park.
Ski and snowshoe rentals are available at the Michigan Tech main trail head.
Grooming generally takes place daily.
Michigan Tech students can ski for free, but there is a fee for nonstudents.
Both day passes and season passes are available. Passes can be purchased at the SDC ticket office or at each trail head where there is a collection pipe. Passes must be displayed while using the trail. For more information on passes, including pricing, click here.
